Following Israel’s intercepting a major assault from Hezbollah early on Sunday morning, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati called for an emergency meeting with his cabinet to halt further escalation.
According to Lebanese news agency NNA, the premier said, “What is required is first to stop the Israeli aggression and then to implement Resolution 1701.”
Resolution 1701 was enacted to end the Second Lebanon War with Israel in 2006 and called for a demilitarized buffer zone between Israel’s border and the Litani River in Lebanon.
The cabinet also discussed the delivery of emergency services, since the country has been experiencing power cuts that have prevented hospitals from functioning efficiently.
