Resolution Rejecting Palestinian Statehood Overwhelmingly Passes Knesset Vote

The Knesset voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution rejecting Palestinian Statehood.

The resolution was proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition and supported by the right-wing and Benny Gantz’s centrist National Unity Party.

Yesh Atid’s Yair Lapid absented himself from the Knesset to avoid voting for it. The only opposition came from Arab parties and the Labor Party.

The vote was 68-9, for and against, respectively.

Although a similar resolution passed in February, it was focused on a unilateral recognition of a Palestinian State, whereas this most recent resolution applied to any proposal for a Palestinian State as part of a negotiated agreement.

The vote comes ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to the United States to address Congress and is expected to upset US Democratic politicians.
