US President Joe Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection in 2024 and endorsed his Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down,” wrote the 81-year-old U.S. president.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president, and while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my
term,” Biden stated.

Questions arose in Biden’s own party about his fitness to run for a second term after a poor performance on a June 27 debate against Donald Trump.

Biden appeared confused and showed signs of mental lapses and speech problems in the debate and appearances since then.

Democratic leaders in the Senate and Congress called on Biden to step down.

The US President made the announcement while isolating following his COVID diagnosis.

Some in the Democratic Party are calling for an open convention and an alternative candidate to Kamala Harris.
