The Israel Prison Service (IPS) has announced plans to dismiss several employees and implement major reforms following an investigation revealing that staff systematically provided preferential treatment to prisoner Kuthair Odeh, a notorious crime boss. This favoritism allowed Odeh to continue running his criminal operations from behind bars.
An investigative committee established by IPS Chief Kobi Yaakobi, found that Odeh was permitted to keep numerous banned items in his cell, including a knife, and had access to guards’ rooms and control over CCTV cameras. He also received special privileges such as superior food, toiletries, and fitness equipment, was escorted to the canteen under protection, and enjoyed a lenient lifestyle. The IPS response to Odeh’s behavior was described as overly accommodating, despite his intimidation of staff members who did not have the support of their superiors.
In light of these findings, the commissioner has mandated immediate administrative actions, including the dismissal of several prison guards and officers at all levels.
