Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara told the High Court of Justice that it was “clearly in the public interest” to proceed quickly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial and asked the court to dismiss a petition that would update the Prime Minister’s conflict of interest agreement.
Baharav-Miara requested the dismissal of a petition that demanded an update and clarification of Netanyahu’s conflict of interest agreement when he was first indicted. The agreement was intended to prevent the Prime Minister from involvement in any issues regarding courts, law enforcements or other matters connected to his case.
The petition was presented by 70 people, including families of hostages who were concerned that Netanyahu’s case would influence his conduct of the war.
However, Baharav-Miara requests the dismissal of this petition because it would further delay the Prime Minister’s corruption trial.
Benjamin was indicted on corruption charges in 2020, and the defense portion of his trial is scheduled to begin in December, with a resolution unlikely until 2028 or 2029.
