Israel’s Environmental Protection Agency released a warning about the Gulf of Eilat on Sunday. The agency said rapidly rising sea temperatures are threatening the ecosystem, including the coral reef.
Eilat’s sea temperature rises 2.5 times faster than the global average, threatening ecosystems and the coral reef.
The seawater was recently recorded at 30 degrees Celsius, whereas the average annual temperature is only 27 degrees Celsius.
To preserve the ecosystem, the Environmental Protection Agency says the risk of oil spills should be removed and is putting pressure on the government to avoid transporting more oil in the area through the Europe Asia Pipeline Corporation (EAPC).
There is conflict within the current government over this policy amid environmentalists’ warnings to reduce the transport of oil in vulnerable areas.
