US officials have indicated that Iran may decide to rethink its threats to attack Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Following a wave of diplomatic efforts from Jordan and the US, Iran initially said it refused to back down from the chance to get revenge against Israel for killing a terror ally on Iranian soil, but in recent days, it seems Iran may be willing to reconsider, according to the Washington Post.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, “It’s urgent that everyone in the region take stock of the situation, understand the risk of miscalculation, and make decisions that will calm tensions, not exacerbate them.”
He added, “We’ve been engaged in intense diplomacy with allies and partners, communicating that message directly to Iran. We’ve communicated that message directly to Israel.”
The fact that Haniyeh was killed by a bomb planted where he was staying rather than an ariel strike may give Iran pause for thought, according to sources, since Iran has carried out similar assassinations in this manner.
