The leader of Hamas’s overseas political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran, Iranian sources announced on Wednesday morning.
Haniyeh, who was killed at his guest house along with a bodyguard, was in Iran to attend a ceremony for the inauguration of Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian.
Hamas confirmed that Haniyeh was dead in what it called a “treacherous Zionist raid.”
A month ago, Hamas’s military leader Mohammed Deif was thought to have been killed by Israel, according to US and Israeli intelligence, but Hamas has denied that he is dead.
The IDF is still searching for Yahya Sinwar, who is allegedly hiding in Gaza’s tunnels.
Haniyeh, Deif, and Sinwar formed the Hamas triumvirate that planned the October 7th invasion that left 1,200 dead in Israel and 250 taken into captivity.
