Heated arguments broke out at the Sde Teiman detention facility in southern Israel when IDF soldiers were questioned by military police over allegations of “serious abuse” of a Palestinian Prisoner.
The investigation was opened by Military Advocate General, Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi.
Nine soldiers have already been detained for questioning and a tenth is going to be added.
The investigation was strongly criticized by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who said “IDF soldiers deserve our respect” and should not be treated like “criminals.”
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein said the Knesset would hold an urgent hearing to discuss the arrest.
He said, “A situation in which masked military policemen raid an IDF base is not acceptable to me and I will not allow it to happen again. Our soldiers are not criminals and this contemptible pursuit of our soldiers is unacceptable to me.”
