According to new research, Israel is an expensive place to live compared to European countries of similar size, and traffic jams alone add 6% to the cost of living.

The average cost of living differential between Israel and European countries shows that Israelis pay 34% more for similar products and services, and traffic jams add 6% to these costs.

Sani Ziv and Oren Shapir conducted the research, which was presented to the Aharon Institute for Economic Policy at Reichman University.

In addition to financial costs, Israeli traffic jams take their toll on the environment and health. According to Harvard research, emissions from traffic congestion alone result in 2,200 premature deaths annually.

Not to mention the massive carbon footprint created by hours spent in traffic a day during a commute.

Fortunately, Israel is finding ways to relieve traffic jams by constructing light rail lines in Tel Aviv and expanding them in Jerusalem.

Remote and hybrid work options can also reduce emissions and are healthier, more cost-effective options for Israeli workers.
