Meta Allows Photo of Female Hostages to Be Posted After Initially Flagging It

Hostages and Missing Families Forum posted pictures of four female soldiers captured by Hamas sitting on mattresses, bloodied and bruised.

The four soldiers pictured were Liri Albag, Karina Ariev, Agam Berger, and Daniella Gilboa. Another picture showed Naama Levy with a black eye.

However, Meta removed the picture at first, saying that it violated its terms of not posting “dangerous individuals and organizations.”

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum posted a screenshot of the message and wrote, “Really?”

However, it later became clear that the picture was flagged erroneously, and Meta maintained that it was not intentional when they replaced the picture.

Meta’s Vice President of Communications, Maayan Sarig, said in a statement, “In an effort to prevent and disrupt real-world harm, we do not allow organizations or individuals that proclaim a violent mission or are engaged in violence to have a presence on our platforms.”

“This case differs from our policy on removing hostage content produced by Hamas,” Sarig told Israel Hayom.

“The image of the captive female field observer soldiers doesn’t violate our policy because it wasn’t produced or published by Hamas. The IDF found it, and the hostages’ families distributed it as proof of life and to raise awareness. We will restore the image to accounts where it was removed.”
