The head of Hamas’s military division, Mohammed Deif, was targeted by the IDF on Saturday, but it still isn’t clear if he has been killed.
Deif and his deputy Rafa’a Salameh were targeted at the al-Mawasi humanitarian zone and the city of Khan Younis.
The two were hiding among civilians, and the IDF confirmed there were no hostages on the premises.
In a press conference, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was “not absolutely certain” Deif had been killed.
A Hamas Deputy denied that the IDF had successfully struck Deif.
Deif, 58, has survived several attempts to target him and was one of the three Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, who planned the October massacre.
On Oct. 7, Deif called on Arabs and Muslims across the Middle East to “set the Earth on fire under the feet of the occupiers [Israel].”
