The Knesset took a significant step towards making companies accountable for the way they treat customers, particularly new immigrants, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Globes reports the Consumer Protection Law was updated to allow the government to take steps to penalize companies that overcharge or give misleading information to people who may be considered vulnerable–including minors, the elderly, immigrants, and disabled customers.
Under the updated legislation, the Consumer Protection and Fair Trade Authority will have the power to block credit card clearance or freeze funds that were unfairly taken from customers to ensure companies amend their practices.
The Commissioner of Consumer Protection and Fair Trade will also have the right to request a warrant if they suspect that a company is repeatedly violating the law.
