French Jews Divided Over Surprise Left-Wing Backlash Against La Pen

France experienced a “hung parliament” after a surprise backlash of left-wing parties beat back advances made by Marine Le Pen’s nationalist right-wing party.

Likewise, many French Jews feel stymied by deciding which is the worst of two scenarios.

First, there is undoubtedly antisemitism on the far left, with anti-Israel rhetoric and protests. Second, although Marine Le Pen has tried to walk past her political routes, her political career is marred by her Holocaust denier father, the late Jean-Marie Le Pen.

French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron faces a fragmented government with the far left in first place, his centrist party in the middle, and Le Pen in third place.

Meanwhile, French Jews feel uncertain about their future with the rise of antisemitism and political conflict.
